Empty Bowls is a community-wide event to ensure that fewer people in the Wichita Falls and surrounding communities go home to an "empty bowl." The basic premise of Empty Bowls involves MSU graduates and instructors working together to create handcrafted bowls. This juried ceramic exhibition will run through October 20 at the Museum of Art at MSU. The juror is Keith Williams, past president of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. The curator will be Pamela Moller (’82). All money raised will be donated to the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank. For more information, click on www.mwsu.info/wfma/event/empty-bowls/.

Parking passes are also available for $10.  Game tickets are good for each of the three games of the tripleheader, which also features Abilene Christian against North Alabama at 4 p.m. and West Texas A&M vs. Texas A&M-Kingsville at 8 p.m.

Hopefully, by now you know that your MSU Mustangs will be making a back-to back appearance at the NCAA Division II Elite Eight Basketball Tournament.  The tournament is in Springfield, Massachusetts - which is a long way from Wichita Falls!  However, for all you Mustangs fans, the first game will be played on Wednesday, March 23 at 11:00 a.m. Central Daylight Time and the game will be available via live stream by going to the MSU athletic web site.  Don’t miss a single play of the game, catch live stats or listen to the game by clicking on the following link, www.msumustangs.com.  It will also be available the day of the game at http://www.ncaa.com/liveschedule.   The Mustangs will play at 5:00 p.m. Central on Thursday, March 24 and again at 12 noon Central on Saturday, March 26 if they continue to win.  The championship game will be nationally televised on CBS so start getting your friends together now for your very own MSU watch party!

Grant McCasland was named the eighth men's basketball coach at Midwestern State University on April 17, 2009.

"Our family is thrilled and honored to come to Midwestern State," McCasland said. "I am thankful (President) Dr. (Jesse W.)  Rogers and (Athletic Director) Mr. (Charlie) Carr for trusting me with the responsibility of leading a program with such a great tradition. I hope to continue that."

If his track record as a five-year coach at Midland College is any indication, the Mustangs will be in good hands.

McCasland led the Chaparrals to a National Junior College Athletic Association championship in 2007 and a national runner-up finish earlier this spring. Midland College has won at least 26 games in each of its season with McCasland at the helm while posting a 143-32 record and an .817 winning percentage.

"We just felt like he was such a good fit for our program and what we are trying to do," Carr said. "He has a great passion for the game, and he came across as having a great passion for the kids in the meetings he had with them."

McCasland led the Chaparrals to the NJCAA Elite Eight in all but two of his seasons at Midland College and earned numerous coaching honors as he was named NJCAA National and Texas Association of Basketball Coaches' Junior College Coach of the Year in his national championship season of 2007. He is a two-time NJCAA District Coach of the Year and earned Western Junior College Athletic Conference top coaching honors on two other occasions.

McCasland, who is the first coaching hire from outside of the Midwestern State staff since Dr. Gerald Stockton accepted the position in 1970, steps into a rich basketball tradition at Midwestern State.

The Artist-Lecture Series will present Justice Alan Page at 7 p.m. March 25  in Akin Auditorium.  Page is a former NFL player and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  Long before Page’s football career came to a close, he was laying the groundwork for his future role as a justice with the Minnesota Supreme Court.  While playing professional football full time, Page attended the University of Minnesota Law School, from which he earned his law degree in 1978.  Following graduation, he worked with the law firm of Lindquist and Vennum in Minneapolis from 1979 to 1984. Midwestern State alumni Hollis R. and Donna Sullivan announced a $1 million gift allocated solely for athletics during a recent luncheon.  The gift is the largest in the history of Midwestern State Athletics.  Sullivan earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from MSU in 1979 and worked briefly for Cobra Oil before starting an oil business with his father.  He formed Hollis R. Sullivan, Inc. in 1990.  "This is where I got started," he said. "I am a big fan of Wichita Falls and realize the importance MSU has in the community. I am really humbled to be able to do this."   The gift will allow a number of much needed, student-athlete friendly projects to come to fruition.   Furthermore, “it could not have come at a better time because of the renovation of the coliseum and the necessity of setting back funds for future scholarships," MSU President Jesse Rogers said.  The renovation of the 40-year-old D.L. Ligon Coliseum will expand the facility to accommodate Midwestern State's 12-sport athletic program which has grown substantially since the school became an NCAA Division II member institution in 1995.  The gift will allow for growth in other important areas outside of the competition arena.  For a complete story click on msumustangs.athleticsite.com/article.  The Sullivan’s are proud parents of a daughter, Lindsey, and two sons, Parker and Houston. Houston is a December 2008 graduate of Midwestern State.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved a new program for Midwestern State University in the field of nursing.  A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program will begin fall 2009.  Students in the program will earn a Master of Science in Nursing with a major in Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing.  The degree will be offered online -the only one of its kind in Texas.  The clinical part of the program will be offered in sites close to where the students live, including rural areas that typically have not been reached.  For program information please contact Dr. Karen Palvado at (940) 397-3254 or at karen.palvado@mwsu.edu.
